What is gold purity?
When shopping for a ring, necklace or bracelet, you may see marks such as 24K, 18K, 14K, 9999, 750 or 585. These figures do not describe the item’s weight. They indicate the proportion of pure gold in the material.
Understanding gold purity makes products easier to compare, helps you choose jewelry suited to how you wear it and prevents confusion between the value of its gold content and the finished retail price of the piece.
Gold purity describes how much pure gold a product contains. In the karat system, pure gold is divided conceptually into 24 parts and is designated 24K.
For example, 18K gold contains 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75% gold. Fourteen-karat gold contains 14 parts gold out of 24, or approximately 58.3%. The balance usually consists of other metals blended in to adjust hardness, color and working properties.
In familiar Vietnamese trade or colloquial terminology, 24K is often called 10-tuổi gold, 18K is 7-tuổi-5 gold and 14K is approximately 5-tuổi-8 gold. These are local shorthand rather than statutory grade names.

The marks 750 and 585 express the number of parts of gold per 1,000 parts of material, corresponding to 75% and 58.5% gold. Vietnam’s regulatory fineness table classifies 24K at 999‰ or above, 18K at 750‰ and 14K at 585‰. By contrast, a 9999 mark denotes 99.99% fineness, so 24K should not automatically be treated as synonymous with 9999 on every product. Marking conventions can also vary by product type and the standard under which the specification is disclosed.

24K gold: high gold content, but relatively soft
Twenty-four karat is the highest grade in the karat system. The theoretical calculation equates 24K with pure gold; Vietnam’s jewelry-gold classification sets 24K at no less than 999‰ fineness. A 9999 mark states the higher figure of 99.99% and is not automatically equivalent to every product marked 24K.
24K gold generally has a rich natural yellow color and is highly malleable. Pure gold is relatively soft, however, so 24K jewelry may scratch, dent or deform more readily when struck.
This does not mean 24K jewelry cannot be worn every day. It simply warrants extra care during exercise, household tasks or contact with hard surfaces.

18K gold: a balance of gold content and durability
Eighteen-karat gold contains 75% pure gold and approximately 25% other metals. The alloying metals make it harder than 24K gold and help it hold shapes and fine details.
Compared with 14K, 18K contains more gold and, when comparing yellow-gold alloys, generally has a richer yellow color. The actual color still depends on the types and proportions of the metals in the alloy.

14K gold: harder and suitable for many frequently worn pieces
Fourteen-karat gold has a nominal gold content of approximately 58.33% under the 14/24 formula. International products may carry either a 583 or 585 mark depending on the applicable standard; Vietnam’s jewelry-gold classification uses 585‰ for 14K. The remainder consists of alloying metals.
When alloy formulation and manufacturing are otherwise comparable, 14K gold is generally harder and more wear-resistant than higher-purity gold. This is why it is often used for jewelry worn regularly or designs that need to retain their shape.
Harder does not mean impossible to scratch, dent or damage. Actual durability also depends on alloy composition, material treatment, thickness, design, workmanship and how the piece is used.
Why do 18K and 14K gold come in different colors?
Pure gold is naturally yellow. Blending it with other metals can give a gold alloy a range of tones.
Color does not by itself reveal gold purity. White gold can be either 14K or 18K, and rose gold is likewise available at different purities. Do not identify a product’s purity from its color alone.
People with sensitive skin should ask about the alloy’s composition, particularly for white gold. Some white-gold alloys contain nickel, which can cause reactions in sensitive wearers, but not every white-gold alloy contains nickel.
- Yellow gold: commonly alloyed with silver, copper or other metals to retain a yellow tone.

Is higher-karat gold always better?
No one type of gold is best in every situation. A higher karat number tells you only that the proportion of pure gold is higher; it does not capture the complete quality or suitability of a piece of jewelry.
The choice should reflect how the piece will be used, its design and thickness, the alloy composition and the seller’s warranty policy.
- If a high gold content and rich yellow color are priorities, 24K may be of interest.
- If you want a balance of gold content, appearance and practicality in jewelry, 18K is a common choice.
- If hardness and frequent everyday wear are priorities, 14K may be more suitable.
Does gold purity determine the entire price of jewelry?
Gold purity is important, but a piece’s retail price is not calculated from its pure-gold content alone. The finished price may include several other components.
Two pieces of jewelry with the same weight and gold purity can therefore have different prices. When comparing them, distinguish between the value of the gold, workmanship charges and the value of any stones or accessories.
The repurchase price may also differ from the original retail price because of workmanship charges, wear, product condition, set stones and the seller’s trade-in policy. Ask how repurchase is calculated before buying rather than assuming that the entire invoice value will be retained.

What to check when buying gold jewelry
1. Inspect the marks on the product
Look for marks such as 24K, 18K, 14K, 9999, 750 or 585. They are often placed inside a ring, near a necklace clasp or in another inconspicuous location.
A hallmark is useful initial information, not conclusive proof on its own. A high-value item or one of uncertain origin may warrant further testing by a qualified provider.
2. Read the invoice or warranty document carefully
The paperwork should clearly state the gold type or fineness; total weight and gold weight if listed separately; information about set stones; workmanship charges and related fees; and the conditions for warranty service, repairs and trade-ins.
3. Distinguish a gold alloy from gold plating
In 18K or 14K gold, gold is present throughout the alloy. A gold-plated item has only a layer of gold over a base metal, and that layer can wear away over time.
If the description is unclear, ask directly whether the entire component is made of 18K or 14K gold or merely plated with gold on the outside.
4. Do not test it yourself by biting, scratching or using chemicals
These folk tests can damage the surface and still do not provide a reliable result. If the purity needs to be established, use a professional testing service or a provider with appropriate equipment.
How to care for gold jewelry
Whether it is 24K, 18K or 14K, jewelry can still become scratched or dirty. A few simple habits can help preserve it:
- Remove jewelry during strenuous activity, household work or contact with hard objects.
- Limit direct contact with cleaning chemicals, cosmetics and swimming-pool water.
- Store pieces separately so they do not rub against one another.
- Wipe jewelry with a soft cloth after wearing it.
- For white gold, ask the seller about inspecting and renewing the rhodium plating if the surface color changes.
- Do not try to bend a deformed piece back into shape yourself, especially if it is set with stones.

Does 18K gold become 14K after years of wear?
